Tesco and Greenvale AP have awarded their 2007 Scottish Potato Grower of the Year Award to Luffness Mains in Aberlady, East Lothian.

The Scotland-based grower supplies Greenvale with some 9,000 tonnes of potatoes every year, 12 months of the year.

The award recognises the integrated farming approach adopted at Luffness Mains, and the way it helped Tesco promote Scottish-bred early potatoes last June by trialling direct deliveries of Vales Emerald to Edinburgh and East Lothian stores from the field to the store in under 24 hours.

The honour was received by Allan Stevenson and Robert Hardy, both from Luffness Mains, at a ceremony held at Kelso Racecourse.

Paul Smith, Tesco senior buyer for potatoes and root vegetables, presented the award.

Doug Hendry, procurement manager at Greenvale AP, said: “Growers are judged against several important criteria, including commitment to Greenvale AP and achievement in Tesco Nature’s Choice, a protocol that demands the highest levels of husbandry and considered use of inputs and crop management. These factors combined with the quality and range of varieties grown on Luffness Mains meant that Robert and Allan were very deserving of the award.”
