Hugh Lowe, chairman of the shadow board of directors put in place to manage change at East Malling Research Station (EMR) until a permanent board is appointed for April 1 2004, said the review process is "an opportunity and we see a good future".

Speaking at the Soft Fruit Conference in Ashford, Kent, Lowe also said that there has been a "very promising" response to adverts for a new chief executive officer for the HRI research station. He added that specific funding for an attractive salary passage for the ceo was helping that process.

Defra, the HDC and other industry bodies have committed support to the station. "The intention of the shadow board of directors is that the new EMR is open to all sectors of the industry," said Lowe. "It should be an interface, everyone must feel it is their centre. We want it to be that you are in touch and can contact anyone their at any time and the directors would welcome any comments or advice."
