Michael Meacher MP has been condemned by Lord May, the President of the Royal Society, for giving an unfair view on the safety of GM food.

Lord May, a former chief scientific adviser to the government, believes Meacher has twisted the facts to suit the case against the introduction of GM foods. The Lord commented that the former environment minister was guilty of distortion and an ideological conviction that had prevented an honest approach to the science of GM.

He said: 'Mr Meacher attempts to play up the uncertainties surrounding the techniques of genetic modification, It is perhaps helpful that he has now made his ideological stance so explicit, so that the public can judge for themselves his statement on GM science.'
