Bernard Leigh

Former Iceland finance director and deputy chairman Bernard Leigh has died.

Leigh passed away unexpectedly aged 68 on 14 February.

He joined the retailer as finance director in 1976 and held the position until March 1998, when he became deputy chairman - a position he held until he retired at the end of June 1999.

Malcolm Walker, Iceland founder and CEO, said: 'Bernie joined (fellow Iceland founder) Peter Hinchcliffe and me at our old head office in Rhyl in 1976. We thought we had achieved a great coup in poaching him from our accountants to professionalise our systems.

'He always kept us on the straight and narrow, and played major roles in the flotation of the company in the stock market in 1984 and the takeover of Bejam in 1988, as well as in presenting our twice-yearly results to the City and the press when we were a public company.

'I am sure that everyone who remembers Bernie will wish to join me in sending our condolences to his wife Carol and children.'
