Londis is taking steps to improve its supply chain efficiency with the introduction of a brand new fleet of environment-friendly lorries for its stores.
The state-of-the-art, chilled capacity vehicles will supplement the existing distribution fleet and be phased into circulation over the next two months.
Chilled produce is a key focus for Londis as it embarks on a re-launch of its entire fresh range.
Having already invested in new supply chain systems, this new fleet will further maximise wastage and manage its fresh offering effectively.
The multi-million pound 72-strong fleet also offers a sound and ecological investment for Londis. The units compromise tractors, trailers and rigid vehicles and the Mercedes Benz tractor units have the latest and most environment-friendly Euro 5 compliant engines, meeting stringent emission standards and offering improved fuel efficiencies. The trailers manufactured by Schmitz Cargobull are also “99 per cent recyclable”.
The new lorries represent a partial replacement of the 400-strong fleet operated by Musgrave Retail Partners GB for their Londis and Budgens stores and will play a key part in its pledge to save 1.3 million road miles this year through its backhauling network scheme announced in January.
Scott Wharton, Musgrave Retail Partners GB supply chain director, said "It is important to us that we offer Londis retailers a first class service from the moment they place their order until it is delivered and I’m delighted that we can now offer a complete service for fresh produce whilst reducing the impact of our operations on the environment. We’ve recently revolutionised our methods of delivery and this new fleet of lorries will underpin our latest procedures.”
