Londis, the largest symbol group in the UK, has announced retail sales figures are up to £1.2 billion for 2006, a four per cent increase on a like-for-like basis, according to the chain.

The results were announced by Chris Martin, chief executive officer at the Musgrave Group, at the Londis national retailer conference in Wales on Thursday.

Martin also revealed a number of other milestones achieved by the business in 2006 including the expansion of the Londis chilled and fresh range including more than 70 items of own-brand fresh produce, the re-launch of a quality Londis own-brand range featuring more than 400 products and an investment of £8.5 million in the refurbishment of 171 stores.

The 2000-strong chain employs more than 20,000 people across the UK.

Martin Hyson, managing director of Musgrave Budgens Londis, said: “We are pleased with the increase in sales from our Londis retail partners. The performance in 2006 is testament to the ongoing innovation and ability to anticipate and meet the needs of the modern British consumer. By adopting a think local, act local philosophy, Londis retailers have been able to anticipate and deliver the needs of individual communities throughout the UK. This philosophy is at the heart of the Londis shopping experience.”
