Deliciouslyorkshire is supporting the government’s call to ensure all local food claims are genuine, following a report that almost a fifth of foods labelled "local" in England and Wales are making the claim falsely.

Supporters of deliciouslyorkshire are said to be “shocked to see so many businesses making these false claims” following the results of the recent report.

The campaigning group also expressed concern that there may be a lack of confidence in the local food market following the report.

The study by Local Government Regulation inspectors tested 558 items in 300 shops, restaurants, markets and factories and found misleading labels across agricultural and horticultural products.

Deliciouslyorkshire director Judy Bell said: “Businesses that falsely claim local provenance damage not only the customers experience but also consumer confidence in genuine local businesses who make the effort to source quality ingredients and support local producers.

“We are glad that the government has stood to attention and it taking action to ensure this doesn’t take place in the future - it will be a significant milestone in the campaign for real, honest and local food.

Deliciouslyorkshire member, Ed Cartwright from Swillington Organic Farm said: “It's disturbing to hear that some businesses are seeking to take advantage of well intentioned consumers looking to support local independent producers. But it’s important that this doesn't impact the majority of genuine local food producers who are producing great quality food for their local communities."
