A campaign against a new Tesco Metro set to open next to a Londis and less than a mile from a Tesco Extra store in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, has been mounted by local businesses and residents.

The protest, started last week by Londis retailers Sandip and Parimala Patel, has already gained the support of 1,000 residents.

Sandip and Parimala have been trading in the area for more than 20 years, having taken over from Sandip’s father who first opened the store in 1972.

Sandip Patel said: “We are part of the community here. We know out customers and what they want, and have always strived to give the best service possible. We have invested significantly in the store so to have a new Tesco Metro suddenly open next door is quite a shock.

“They say they want to be part of the community, but there are already plenty of local shops in this area including another large Tesco just up the road. The fact that over 1,000 people have already signed our petition, and it’s only been up for a week, shows that the local community doesn’t want another Tesco.”
