Live Trace is already being used by potato firm Mercian

Fresh produce suppliers can benefit from a first-of-its-kind traceability cloud computing software package that uses photos taken at field level to track the entire supply chain.

Growers or farmers can take a photo of a field using the Live Trace app, and enter the coordinates of the location into the cloud computing space to generate a container-specific QR code.

Packers, processors, retailers and others in the supply chain can then access the information and track a specific container on its journey throughout the rest of the chain. The cost of becoming a licence holder for the technology starts at £10,000, with bespoke packages available.

The technology, which is now commercially available and works on any Apple device, can be tailored to a specific product or customer need and can provide services such as loading data, delivery or residue testing information.

Live Trace’s Jon Kemp said the first rollout with Cheshire potato firm Mercian has been successful and generated good feedback.

“There is nothing else like this in the market place. It is a cloud computing software package that is able to process information through an app. We’ve had lots of interest in it.” said Kemp, who was exhibiting at Fruit Logistica this week.
