Spalding producer Lingarden has installed a new Safeline signature detector, to perfect the difficult task of metal detection in its onion packhouse.

Onions are notoriously difficult when it comes to metal detection, as they give off an interfering electromagnetic signal when wet and acidic.

Lingarden's Veridian division, which concentrates solely on processing onions for the UK catering sector, selected the signature detector, “because its ultra high operating frequency means it is able to consistently detect tiny pieces of metal even in such highly conductive foods.

Project engineering manager Tony Thompson said: “It's important we check for metal contamination after processing and just prior to packing and installation of the signature means both we and our customers have confidence that our onions are being inspected at the best level.”
