Lilly Mashing Potatoes, grown by Greenvale and sold exclusively at the Co-op, have won a Quality Food Award in the unprepared vegetable category.
Launched in 2017 as the first potato product in the supermarket’s Irresistible range, Lilly is a golden skinned potato with a pale yellow centre. When cooked, its smooth texture is well suited to mashing.
The variety, developed over the past ten years and grown by a small number of UK growers, has an extra buttery taste, reducing the need for butter when mashed.
Following the success of the variety’s launch at the Co-op, Irresistible Baby Potatoes were added to the range earlier this year and will be followed by Irresistible Roasting Potatoes, which are due to launch in time for Christmas.
Chantelle Wakes, potato buyer at the Co-op, said: “We are delighted by the win and it is great to see a potato variety receive this coveted accolade. It is a worthy winner and has become a firm favourite amongst our customers.”
