“Life is very long when you’re lonely,” sang Morrissey. Recent evidence, however, offers proof that he was wrong. For now, it seems evident that life is very long if you eat potatoes.

The world’s oldest man, who turned 116 last week, puts his longevity down to a diet of potatoes and healthy outdoor living.

Hryhory Nestor from the Ukraine is presumed to be the world’s oldest living man. His passport, based on Austrian documents, says he was born on March 15, 1891.

The Ukrainian attributes his long life to healthy outdoor living, and in a move guaranteed to horrify Britain’s diet-obsessed, recommends a diet of potatoes, milk and cheese.
