Lidl had a strong 2013

Discount supermarket Lidl enjoyed its best-ever performance over a Christmas period in 2013.

This followed what was already the retailer's most successful ever year, with 23 December - Lidl's busiest trading day - proving to be the icing on the cake.

A spokesperson for Lidl, said: '2013 has been our most successful year in the history of Lidl UK, and we would hope to see this continue throughout 2014.

'October saw the launch of our first ever national TV advertising campaign, focusing heavily on our Deluxe range, and we consider this to be one of the contributing factors towards our recent successes.'

Lidl has 600 stores across England, Wales and Scotland, and there are plans to open between 16 to 20 new stores in 2014.

On top of that, the retailer has started construction on a brand-new £40 million distribution centre in Northfleet, Kent.

The spokesperson, added: 'People are initially attracted by our low pricing strategy, but it's the product quality that keeps them coming back.

'We've also noticed a marked shift in our core customer base over the last two years. Between 2011 and 2012, the proportion of ABC1 customers coming through our doors increased from 25 per cent to 41 per cent and, currently, our AB customer base makes up 24 per cent of all our customers.

'We attribute much of this changing customer base to the fact that more and more people are realising the incredible value we offer and that they can do their full weekly shop at Lidl without needing to go anywhere else. It's an encouraging sign that our supermarket is appealing to a broad audience and that we're successfully anticipating the needs and demands of our customers.'
