The Brazilian Wandering Spider

A Lidl customer got a shock when he bought bananas infested with eggs he feared were from the Brazilian Wandering Spider.

A bite from the arachnid is notorious for causing four-hour erections in men, as well as abdominal cramps, hypothermia, blurred visions, convulsions and even death.

According to the Plymouth Herald, author Quentis Rees got home from grocery shopping at a branch of Lidl in Torquay when he discovered a “white cocoon of eggs” on the side of one of his bananas.

Rees contacted Paignton Zoo and Environmental Park, as well as Public Health England and a local pet store. They confirmed the find was most likely spider eggs.

However importers cast doubt on claims the eggs could have been from the Brazilian Wandering Spider, insisting these were never found on bananas and they were much more likely harmless fruit spider species.

Lidl apologised and asked the customer to get in touch. 'We have thorough procedures in place to ensure that the fresh fruit and vegetables available in our stores are of the highest possible quality for our customers,” a spokesman told the Plymouth Herald. “We are therefore very sorry to hear that these standards have not been met on this occasion.”
