Lidl are planning to open a new regional distribution centre near Leeds after purchasing a 38-acre site.

The new centre, in Gildersome, will be their 17thto open in the UK following years of sustained expansion as Britain’s fastest growing supermarket.

Lidl says the distribution centre could create as many as 500 jobs once it becomes operational.

In January the German discounter announced plans to open their largest warehouse near Luton, with plans to build four new warehouses in the coming years.

The purchase of the site forms part of Lidl’s £1.45billion expansion investment in Great Britain, with distribution centres opened in Exeter and Wednesbury in 2017.

Ingo Fischer, Lidl UK board director for expansion and development, said: “As we continue to open new stores and serve more customers across the country, it’s important that we also continue to build foundations for the future.

“This latest investment joins a long line of Lidl warehouses set to open over the next seven years, which are all vital in supporting our growth.”
