Lettuce and green beans have run the shortest since the frosts in Spain struck production earlier this year.

According to figures from the national ministry for industry, trade and tourism prices on both lines were up in March by nearly 15 per cent on the previous month indicative of the shortage of product in the market.

Accumulated price inflation on green beans over the 12-month period from April 2004 was 80 per cent compared to 42 per cent on lettuce.

Orange prices were up in March by 7.3 per cent a climb of almost 8 per cent year on year. Tomato price increases were more outlandish at 3.57 per cent compared to February, and by more than 33 per cent year on year.

Canary Islands bananas also enjoyed a price hike of almost two per cent month on month and 37 per cent year on year.
