Kids can make thier own virtual lettuce on the website

The British Leafy Salads Association (BLSA) has launched its new interactive website for kids, based around the character of Lenny Lettuce.

Loveable Lenny will be a ‘spokeslettuce’ for the campaign, which aims to increase consumption of leafy salads in the UK.

He introduces each page on the website, which features an interactive make-your-own-salad game called Lenny’s Lunch, where children can create their own salad and score points towards their 5 A DAY and the overall healthiness of their dish.

A colouring-in sheet featuring Lenny as a salad farmer has been devised to help teach children where salad comes from and about the natural habitat it grows in.

Other highlights include some easy salad recipes that children can put together with the help of a grown-up, which were devised by Carola Weymouth who runs leading UK kids’ cookery school Cookie Crumbles.

The site - www.lennylettuce.co.uk - has been designed as a resource for teachers and parents to help communicate to children the health benefits of eating salad in a fun way.

BLSA chairman David Piccaver said: “We feel as a voice for the salad industry we have a responsibility, along with the government and well known chefs, to teach the next generation about healthy eating. Salad as a nutritious and delicious living product is ideally placed to be a part of that education. And through its diversity of flavours and varieties, when mixed with other ingredients such as proteins and carbohydrates, it has something to enthuse every young palate.”
