Lemons in size squeeze

The Argentinean lemon crop is looking healthy a month before harvest gets underway, although a lack of water is likely to take its toll on fruit size and quantity.

According to reports from the Tucumán citrus association published in Argentinean weekly La Gaceta Rural, volumes for export should nevertheless be similar to last year. Drought conditions in the spring and much of the summer have had a detrimental effect on fruit size, but they have also made it hard for many pests and disease to thrive.

The association forecasts that the climate will mean a later than usual start to the harvest for export fruit.
