Lemon groves face drought

A spring drought in the north-western Argentinean region of Tucuman is affecting lemon plantations, local press reports suggest.

The area is the main lemon-growing region in the southern hemisphere and the implications are serious for next year’s crop which usually starts arriving in the UK in mid-spring.

“Plantations are going through acute stress,” one grower told La Gaceta. “Blossom is falling and even recently set fruit is dropping to the ground.” He fears for the early crop shipped to Europe and beyond.

This time of year is usually quite dry in the region, although not to the extremes being see this season. Rain is forecast for the upcoming weekend, which producers hope will give trees a boost.
