Legume growers full of new ideas

The initiative will bring to life the nutritional and taste benefits of the products through class talks and online activity packs which can be used at home or school.

Full of Beans is targeting children aged four to six and is backed by Barfoot’s of Botley, Bomfords, Exotic Farm Produce, Mack Multiples and Manor Fresh. The backers hope to encourage more kids to understand and eat their products and incorporate them into traditional games, gardening activities, cookery, craftwork and botany.

“The summer holidays can be tricky for parents, keeping children occupied during the long break from school is challenging,” Diana Rees, category controller at Manor Fresh. “As beans and peas are in season, readily available and at their best, it seemed perfect timing for us to step in and give parents a helping hand. Hopefully they will also see children eating and enjoying their vegetables.”

The campaign focuses on traditional UK runner, broad and dwarf beans and fresh peas, and also sees growers go into schools in June, to enthuse pupils following the successful pilot in 2006.

Growers will give class talks or join in school gardening or science clubs to tell children what beans and peas are, how they grow, why they are good for them and to give them a chance to pod the legumes themselves.
