Pauline Hobson of Hexthorpe Primary School in Doncaster won the Le Crunch competition as children nation-wide were asked to send in a picture of their favourite dinner lady and ask her to tell a joke.

The pictures of the Doncaster comedienne were taken by the pupils and show her dressed up in an apple hat with apple cheeks in a variety of school situations. Her winning joke was: 'Why was Granny Smith cross at the Gala? Because she was pipped at the post by a Braeburn.' The prize is £400 of Regis Beauty & Hair vouchers and the school will receive £1,250 to buy school equipment. Every pupil also received a Le Crunch apple.

Two runner-up schools – St John's Primary, Southport and Inchkeith School, Culross – won £750 and £500 respectively and a delivery each of Le Crunch apples.

Le Crunch organised the competition in October 2001 as part of a wider educational project reaching 5,000 primary schools in the UK with an education pack, video and poster. The competition, which invited children to send in a photo of their favourite dinner lady having a Le Crunch moment, was also highlighted in the October issue of Headteacher Update.
