A new variety of potato has scooped a prestigious taste test award at a leading London hotel.
Lady Christl scooped the accolade of best-tasting potato at the capital's award-winning Lanesborough, in an event organised by the British Potato Council (BPC) and top UK chef Paul Gayler, pictured.
The breed, which became commercially available this year was the outright winner, scoring top marks for flavour, appearance, aroma and texture.
Salad variety Charlotte took second spot in the contest, Premiere came third.
BPC chairman David Walker believed the top varieties to be best of a good bunch.
He said: 'You can't beat British new potatoes for freshness. Some of our growers are lifting new potatoes at 5am to get them into the shops by 9am. That is a great tribute to their dedication and the way they are meeting the needs of the market.'
