The South Korean island of Jeju has begun exporting a small amount of citrus to the UK.

A research organisation run by Jeju National University said it is to send 20 tonnes of this year's citrus crop to these shores.

The research organisation has been developing export strategies for the UK market since last year, under the auspices of the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

It has examined quality and food safety requirements, as well as consulting with local companies.

As a result, a 100kg sample was sent to British fruit importer Fesa, and positive results meant the first shipment was approved.
