A new set of logos and standards has been introduced by the Soil Association (SA) to help consumers identify British, English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish organic food.

Patrick Holden, director of the SA said: 'Our new logos provide a simple cost-effective means for businesses to differentiate home-produced products and help boost the market for UK food.' While the logos have been designed to incorporate the certifying body's logo along with the country or region of origin, the standards will combine strictness on production with flexibility on processing.

Multi-ingredient products can, with permission, contain five per cent non-local ingredients if certain items are not available.

The logos will be available for use by organic producers and processors at no extra charge - regardless of their certification body.
