Business is good for kiwifruit growers

Zespri, the world’s largest kiwifruit marketer, announced a growth in profits after a record volume of kiwifruit last year.

The New Zealand-based distributor’s global revenue for 2011/2012 grew NZ$1.62 million, a climb of seven per cent, after a record volume of crop tallied 116.5 million trays.

Domestically, total returns to New Zealand growers also grew in the same period to $980.4 million, an 11 per cent increase.

Despite a successful year for kiwifruit, Zespri chairman John Loughlin has expressed concerns for kiwifruit volumes in the year ahead.

He said: “There will be a drop in kiwifruit volume in the next 12 months which will put much of the industry under pressure, but we have positioned ourself for these lower volumes in 2012/13, through a reduction of $10 million in corporate costs.”
