Kiwi drop for Zespri

Zespri’s first income forecast for the New Zealand kiwifruit season shows an expected decrease in returns to growers of green and organic green fruit due to tough market conditions and an abundance of summer fruit lines in Europe.

Lain Jager, ceo of the kiwifruit marketer, said: “It is important to look beyond the increase in total fruit and service payments because the story is very different for each category. The per-tray forecast at 10 cents down on green kiwifruit is relatively flat on last year… The green market is not getting any easier, but there is a viable business into the future. We are strongly focused on driving value back into this business over the next five years.”
