Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King has moved to quash speculation he may join upmarket rivals Marks & Spencer as is looks to find a new boss.
M&S is looking to replace its executive chairman Sir Stuart Rose, who is scheduled to step down from the role in July 2011.
The upmarket retailer has received a number of requests to represent it in dealing with the appointment.
King’s name, along with head of M&S's food business John Dixon and Asda chief executive Andy Bond, had been suggested as the most likely candidates for the prestigious position.
But in an interview with Sky News, King re-affirmed his position at the top of the Sainsbury’s tree. He said: "I've said many, many times I am thoroughly enthusiastic about Sainsbury's. I see my future at Sainsbury's.
"I am enjoying my time at Sainsbury's and I see myself at Sainsbury's for a long time to come."
King stepped down as executive director of M&S’s food unit in 2003 shortly before joining Sainsbury’s the following year.
Rose will step down in July 2011 after a period as chairman following the appointment of the new chief executive.
