Kids learn the benefits of gardens

Some 200 primary school teachers from across Yorkshire are learning how a garden can enhance children’s education, thanks to a new initiative by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society.

‘Creating A School Garden For Primary Schools’ was originally planned as a one-off event for 20 teachers - but demand for places led to a series of courses being scheduled to run at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate, from spring through to the end of June.

Hazel Baker, education adviser for the society, said the interest from schools across the region had been tremendous - far beyond what was originally envisaged.

“It’s always exciting for children to see a project through from the design stage to realising the fruits of their labours - literally in some cases!” she exclaimed.
