The British Potato Council (BPC) has pioneered a cookery competition to improve schoolchildren's scant awareness of the UK staple.
Potato chiefs launched the scheme after discovering that eight of 10 six to nine-year-olds thought potatoes grew on trees.
To enter, budding junior chefs will be required to design and cook a meal for two using potatoes - with a strict spending limit of £5.
Berkshire pupils will be the first to take part in the masterchef-style Potty about Potatoes initiative before it moves to other areas.
Each contestant will receive an official apron and £5 food vouchers from sponsors Waitrose, with the overall winners hopefully scooping electronic goods from a major technology firm.
The victor's school will also receive a prize.
Bosses at Windsor and Maidenhead Education Business Partnerships, organising the contest, explained that the potato was a multi-cultural and versatile cooking ingredient and that the culinary showdown had important links to other areas of study.
Partnership manager Jenny Asher said: 'As well as the fun element, the competition and accompanying resource pack provides valuable curriculum links to maths, science, design and technology and even history.'
