KG Fruits, the UK’s largest soft fruit co-operative, plans to expand into Europe - both exporting berry fruit and working with other similar groups on the Continent to meet retailers’ year-round requirements, company director Professor David Hughes revealed during the English Farming & Food Partnership annual conference held in London this week.

KG has already taken the first steps to enter Europe through its link with the Spanish-based Alconeras grower group. It has also developed a variety trial programme for its members with US breeder Driscoll, which is having an impact on supermarket shelves.

“Our members know that this is our aim, and discussions are taking place to develop relationships to the benefit of our grower owners,” Hughes said.

“Our view is that national markets will start to merge across Europe, driven by major retailers developing trans-national offers.”
