Kent potatoes new at Tesco

Tesco has stepped up its commitment to local sourcing with the launch of two potato lines across Kent stores from specialist supplier St Nicholas Court Farms.

The move is part of a wider pledge made by the supermarket giant to work with local suppliers and source local produce.

Kentish Desiree and Kentish White potatoes will be available in Kent stores in distinctive St Nicholas Court Farms packaging from January 29.

A significant proportion of the potatoes grown for St Nicholas Court Farms are produced within five miles of its packhouse at Wade on the Isle of Thanet.

The Kent-based firm has worked with Tesco for the past two years to raise the profile of local supply through the Locally Grown in Kent campaign.

Nick Tap, managing director of St Nicholas Court Farms, said: “Because of where we are based, we have been promoting local Kent produce with Tesco for some time. This is significant step forward that shows Tesco has confidence in us and in local produce.

“The fact that the potatoes will be sold in our own packaging, rather than Tesco own-label bags, is very positive and has not happened with a commodity product for some time.

“We both believe the consumer wants to buy local and wants to know when they are buying local.”

Paul Smith at Tesco said: “Our customers tell us they want more local products. The launch of these two new lines is a natural progression of our commitment to supply more locally produced products. A broader range of products will be launched in May 2007.”
