The branded potatoes will be on sale this month

Thanet-based potato specialist The Kent Potato Company will launch the first in a series of own label branded potato varieties this month.

The new packs will feature throughout Tesco stores within the Kent area and showcase the various varieties from across the region.

The Kent Potato Company Brand will launch in mid-August with a 2kg pack of Kent new potatoes.

New season Desiree and King Edward varieties will follow along with product development across prepared and snacking lines.

Kent Potato Company sales and marketing manager Eddie Knowles said the aim of the new brand is to “highlight and educate customers about the great products that are available on their doorstep”.

“Kent is affectionately known as The Garden Of England and our potatoes are reflective of some of the great work that goes on throughout the area

“Tesco has been a key partner in ensuring local businesses like ourselves have a presence within the community and our own research has highlighted how important provenance is to the consumer,” he added.

The launch marks the beginning of a renaissance for the company previously known as St Nicholas Court farms until its acquisition by The Jersey Royal Company mid-2009.

New infrastructure has been put in place throughout the Thanet site, with investment in the region of £1.65 million being made to improve pack house, delivery and cold store areas.

Tesco local buying manager Quentin Sandell said: “The Kent Potato Company is a key player in the Tesco local strategy going forward. Consumers are more aware that ever as regards food produced within the local area.

“With Tesco’s ongoing commitment to the local plan and product developments such as The Kent Potato company brand, we are confident that our shoppers will be able to get the best produce time after time.”
