February was both busy and eventful, with overriding plant health issues, to our consternation, spilling over into March still unresolved.

Following every effort by the FPC to keep the industry informed and provide a face-to-face discussion with Defra officials to sort out issues surrounding the implementation of this legislation, I was somewhat disappointed at the length of time it took for members to realise the consequences and the impact, whether direct or indirect, on their individual businesses. My thanks to those of you who understood the gravity of the situation, and supported the FPC initiative to confront Defra and use its influence to endeavour to achieve a satisfactory solution.

A visit to Corby last month to catch up with David Ibbotson and his team at Pauleys was of great interest. A major player in the produce sector, we were extremely impressed with the forward-thinking and proactive approach of this incontrovertibly successful business, and thank the Pauleys team for its kind hospitality and creative discussion. We look forward immensely to working with them.

Keeping it in the Midlands, we were delighted to visit Leicester Wholesale Market at the invitation of Phil Kimberley, managing director of C&P Wilson Ltd. This innovative, successful business has experienced considerable growth, and is a positive response to those who question the future of UK wholesale markets. It was great for us to make new friends, and distinctly refreshing to discuss industry issues in such an upbeat environment.

Maintaining the positive momentum, at the recent Covent Garden Market Authority reception, the vision for the future was impressive, and the metamorphosis planned for this great market is further evidence of positive progression in our changing times.

Whilst we forge ahead with enthusiasm to right the wrongs and address the obvious difficulties faced by our industry going forward, it is important to note that there are many success stories out there.

Thank you to all those who submitted entries for the Re:fresh Awards. We look forward to seeing you all on May 8 for an outstanding conference and awards ceremony.
