New Zealand-Australia based Freshmax has won marketing rights for Kanzi apples in New Zealand.
The deal has been years in negotiation and means that New Zealand growers will be able to produce the Braeburn-Gala cross for export.
The first trees are due to go into the ground in both Hawkes Bay and Nelson during the NZ winter in the next few months and first fruit for export is expected in 2014.
Tony Mahoney, Freshmax ceo said his company is “very excited” and is “optimistic that Kanzi will provide a foundation for sustainable and profitable NZ apple returns in the future, particularly in the European market”.
