Kaki crop suffers cold snap

A sharp fall in temperatures at the weekend in the Valencia region has played havoc with the kaki crop. Market-leading co-operative Anecoop confirmed this week that about 80 per cent of the fruit remaining on trees in the region could have been lost to the cold. This could be as much as 20,000 tonnes of this fruit, and according to director general of the co-op José María Planells, represents about 30-40 per cent of the total crop and potential losses of €20 million to the sector.

This is a major blow to the kaki sector which had been enjoying a very promising start to the season and was benefiting from promotion of the Denomination of Origin for Kaki de Ribera del Xuquer in the UK and German markets.
