Junami does the magic for Asda

Asda and International Produce (IP) have launched Junami apples, new to the UK market and exclusive to the retailer.

The Idared-Elstar cross, selected from 400 clones, is the product of a Swiss breeding programme. It was grown for the first time commercially in spring 2004 in the Netherlands, and IP received the first samples in 2006. Exclusivity was secured for the 2007 season.

In March 2008, IP is planning to visit South Africa to select growers who can develop continuity and availability of the apple.

Junami is a red, crisp, smooth-skinned variety. It will be marketed as Extra Special and is available in Asda stores from December to late April
