Jumping for Jazz

Base jumping may have been dubbed the world’s most dangerous extreme sport by its participants, but Jazz apples aren’t afraid to get involved.

The apple variety has sponsored extreme sports expert Tim Emmett to open a new BASE jump at the edge of Cheddar Gorge, Britain’s most challenging limestone cliff top.

Emmett, who is best known for his race against Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson up the side of the Verdon Gorge in France, said: “Cheddar Gorge is the ultimate and most demanding BASE jump in the UK, if not the world and it is a privilege to open up this new jump, especially in such stunning surroundings - I definitely feel at one with nature.”

In Spring 2006, some 200 acres and 200,000 trees of Jazz apples were planted across Kent, East Anglia, South East England and the West Country. The apples, which are a cross between Braeburn and Royal Gala varieties, are part of an ongoing campaign to promote the 5-a-day message. As part of the promotion, Emmett will tour schools to encourage children to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
