Growers of Driscoll Jubilee strawberries are anticipating a record yield this season, due to the coolest spring in over three years.
Although cold weather conditions delayed the start of growing this year, the delay has resulted in more maturing time for the plants to grow strong before producing strawberries, with growers subsequently claiming that this year's Jubilee strawberries will swell in size and produce sugar levels at their 'highest-ever' level.
'Consumers have come to expect a very high standard from Jubilee when it comes to quality and flavour, and we are confident that this summer’s produce will exceed their expectations, in delivering these premium attributes and further driving sales within supermarkets,' said Paul Kelsey, chairman of Berry Gardens.
Kelsey is anticipating strong sales, with 1,600 tonnes of Jubilee strawberries set to be harvested this year. With the season running from June to September, Jubilee strawberries will be stocked by retailers including Waitrose, M&S, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's as part of each retailer's premium range.
