John Richard “Jack” Simplot, founder of the JR Simplot Company, died peacefully in his home in Boise, Idaho on Sunday May 25, at the age of 99.

In 1928, Jack bought an electric potato sorter, enabling him to start a business that over the years developed into a multi-national enterprise, producing a wide range of agricultural and food products.

Simplot is one of the largest frozen potato processing companies in the world, with annual sales of about $3 billion (£1.5bn). The company employs approximately 10,000 people worldwide and is still family owned.

In Europe, Simplot became an important player in avocado products and finger food.
