The Co-operative Group has confirmed it will be making redundancies, mainly at its headquarters in Manchester, as part of the restructuring of its food business.
Management and administrative staff have been told the business needs to offer a better service to customers while improving cost effectiveness. Staff at its stores and depots are not being affected.
A spokesman stressed a consultation process was in its early stages and it was “not possible to quantify the final impact on staff.”
However, the Manchester Evening News has reported that as many as 280 jobs could be axed.
“Some of those affected would have the opportunity to apply for roles in the new structure and others would be offered voluntary redundancy,” the Group spokesman said.
“Everything possible would be done to support employees, including identifying potential roles in other Group businesses and assistance in finding other employment at what was recognised to be a difficult time for them.”
The announcement comes shortly after the Co-operative’s announcement that it is investing heavily within its food business and plans to increase opening hours across its stores to meet customer demand.
The consultation period is expected to end in mid-May.
