Jersey sendings dip

The Jersey Royal season is winding up with sendings to the UK down on last year. Total exports have fallen some 20 per cent on last season to 30,400 tonnes from 38,000t following a long, cold winter, which affected the early part of the campaign and delayed plantings. However, marketers report strong demand throughout the season, which at its peak saw exports from the Channel Island reach 1,200t a day.

A difficult start to the season was followed by ideal May and June conditions - considerably better than during the harvest period in 2005. The result has been excellent quality of the liftings which have shown good texture and flavour.

The potato seed harvest is now in full flow on the island.
