Jersey Royal Pearl potatoes in Tesco earlier than ever

The Jersey Royal Company has announced its premium potatoes are in Tesco this week, while Morrisons will have the spuds in stores by the weekend.

The new Pearl variety produces small individual tubers that develop and are ready to lift sooner than other types.

A spokesman for the Jersey Royal Company said: “Pearl is about half the size of other new potatoes and was introduced in Jersey about two years ago. This is the first year where there is the volume available for it to be sold commercially on a wide scale."

Growing conditions looked very positive at the start of the year and industry insiders were forecasting an unusually early start, before a three-week cold snap in February effectively suspended growth and knocked the crop back.

The result is a start date more in line with traditional averages rather than as early as recent years.
