Japanese producers stole the show at Fruit Logistica with their display of giant, and expensive, fruit.
The Stark Jumbo apple made its debut at the show, being three times the size of traditional European fruit, with each fruit costing around €1,000.
Another fruit on offer was the Shinano Gold, a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Japanese variety, Senshu, which has a thin golden-yellow skin and is described as firmer than most European.
Yutaka Yamono, of Katayama Ringo Co Ltd, said: “We realise that the European fruit market is highly competitive, but Japan has a great many varieties and sizes of apples and all of them are of high quality.”
