Jamaica’s Rural Agricultural Development Authority and the European Union signed contracts authorising 11 small grants totalling J$11 million (£92,440) to help former workers in Jamaica’s banana industry diversify into new businesses.

The beneficiaries of the grants, the final component in a J$400 million scheme set up by the EU and RADA two years ago, were all selected on the basis of the economic viability of their projects. They include hot chilli pepper production as well as agro-processing, goat breeding and honey production.

The allocation of the funding was to assist those growers and export workers that have been affected by the reduction in Jamaica’s banana export activity over the past decade.
