Jaffa gets Rishon famous

Jaffa is launching a new clementine into the UK market this Christmas, called Rishon.

Grower and importer, Mehadrin Tnuport Export (MTEX), will be marketing the new variety from the beginning of next week.

Dov Warmen, managing director, said: “Rishon is a unique variety, in both flavour and appearance.”

The fruit is a hybrid of two varieties, Temple and Michal. Temple has been popular since it was discovered growing wild in Jamaica in 1896.

Michal is a natural hybrid of clementine and tangerine.

Rishon is described as very sweet and juicy, and easily peeled.

It is grown in Israel’s fertile coastal district and MTEX expects to export 10,000 cartons to the UK from a total crop of 3,500 tonnes.

It will be sold pre-packed as part of the Jaffa easy-peeler line, with all packing being carried out in the UK.
