Hurricane Ivan has smashed into the US coast at Alabama, but Florida citrus producers may not have completely escaped.
The 135 mph storm made landfall near Mobile, Alabama and is moving north, but officials in Florida are warning that Ivan could still cause widespread damage to the state’s western counties, regardless of where the core travels.
One official said: “Unless it goes to Texas, we’re not going to get out of this.” Tornadoes triggered by Ivan have already killed two people in the Florida panhandle.
Even if Ivan does manage to miss the already battered citrus production, growers are still looking nervously south east, where tropical storm Jeanne is gathering strength near Puerto Rico.
