Two Italian firms are aiming to achieve strong environmental goals after an agreement to unite their packaging and produce functions.

Bologna-based biodegradable PLA packaging firm ILIP and Valfrutta Fresco, who supply across the fruit and vegetable range, have come together to create 100 per cent biodegradable packaging following a meeting at this year’s Fruit Logistica in Berlin in February.

PLA is a natural polymer obtained from fermented corn starch and completely decomposes into organic materials without harming the environment. The companies have worked to ensure that even the label bearing the Valfrutta brand is made from PLA, resulting in a package that is 100 per cent biodegradable.

Riccardo Pianesani, legal representative of ILPA srl, ILIP Division, said: “We are extremely satisfied with this partnership with Valfrutta because it allows us to start 2009 focusing on the issue which is closest to our hearts, namely environmental protection, while involving a leading fruit and vegetable producer in the use of our eco-compatible materials.”

All Valfrutta fresh produce will now be sold in fully biodegradable packs supplied by ILIP.

At Fruit Logistica, ILIP also showcased a new pack designed for pears in the shape of a clam shell, with four pockets which accommodate the pears, protecting them from bruising. It is available in two formats, one for medium-sized fruit (65-75cm) and one for larger fruit (75-85cm). The base has been designed so that the tray is suspended above the bottom of the container to keep the fruit in a better-protected position.
