Youngsters are thin on the ground in Italy’s agricultural industry, according to the country’s observatory for entrepreneurial resources in the agricultural sector (Oiga).

Latest figures about the age range of growers and entrepreneurs has shown that Italy is in last place with regard to young people’s presence in the primary sector.

“The sector is getting older and older,” said observatory chairman Pantaleo Mercurio. “According to the latest figures, some 50 per cent of employees are aged over 55.

“Despite a project which destined funds for generational renovation from 2000 to 2006, many firms have simply transferred their nominal leaderships from fathers to sons, instead of making real investments in innovations and training young people. This is not good news.”
