The Irish Seed Saver Association (ISSA) is holding a Biodiversity Day on May 20 as a celebration of the organisation’s work in preserving heritage fruit trees, seeds and grains.

The event will feature garden tours and walks of ISSA’s Native Heritage Orchards, Vegetable and Herb Gardens and Native Woodlands.

A full organic café will also be open all day, together with a farmers’ market selling local produce. Workshops will include native fruit varieties, vegetable seed processing, rare Irish grains, and planting organic gardens, among other things.

The ISSA is a voluntary organisation dedicated to the location and preservation of traditional varieties of fruit and vegetables. It maintains a seed bank which distributes seeds of non-commercially available vegetables, as well as a network of heritage potatoes.

These are then passed on to members so they can be maintained to ensure a ‘living agricultural legacy.’
