Harvesting Trooper

Harvesting Trooper

Agrexco shipped its first autumn melons out of Israel on September 4.

Trooper makes up about 70 per cent of the first shipment and the variety, which has been appearing on the UK market for about four seasons, is characterised by its distinctive texture and taste, as well as its small seeds and 10-15 per cent brix levels.

Sendings are from GlobalGAP-certified growers only and are destined for the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Austria and Scandinavia. Spain and Greece are also receiving the fruit in its largest size profile. The melons arrive onto the marketplace as Spanish quantities wind down and just as Brazil begins its season.

Agrexco’s melon and watermelon product manager Yoni Assenheim told FPJ production conditions have been favourable. He said: “This summer was very hot in Israel, which is what melons require. The fruit is grown in the Arava area in southern Israel. As an autumn variety, we are able to supply Trooper from the beginning of September until mid-December.”

In the UK, Trooper, pictured, is available at Marks & Spencer and at Sainsbury’s under the chain’s Taste the Difference label.
